Both participants were enrolled in the Bachelor of Indonesian Development Drivers (SPPI) Program, a military initiative aimed at cultivating disciplined and capable personnel. The program was conducted at various TNI educational facilities, but the incident occurred at different locations for each candidate.

Details of the Tragedy

Anisa Muyassaroh, one of the deceased, succumbed to heat stroke during her training at Satdik Dodikjur Rindam VI/Mulawarman Balikpapan. Her health issues began on June 18, 2026, and she received treatment at the unit’s medical facility before being transferred to a hospital. A statement from Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, head of the Defense Information Bureau, noted that she was pronounced dead based on medical findings.

“Based on medical information, she was declared dead due to heat stroke,” Rico stated in a written message on June 23, 2026.

Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq, the second individual, passed away from cardiac arrest while training at Satdik Puslatpur Kodiklatad Baturaja. His condition worsened on June 17, 2026, and he was treated by medical staff at the unit before being hospitalized. Rico confirmed the cause of death as per medical reports.

“Based on medical information, he was declared dead due to cardiac arrest,” Rico added.

Program and Training Context

The SPPI program, launched on June 17, 2026, is designed to develop human resources with strong leadership, managerial skills, and a commitment to national growth. The training is set to continue for 45 days, concluding on July 31, 2026. A total of 35,476 candidates are enrolled, including 30,000 for the Red and White Village Cooperatives and 5,476 for the Red and White Fishers’ Villages.

Ministry Response

Rico emphasized that the Ministry of Defense and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) have prioritized the safety and well-being of participants. Following the incident, the Ministry is collaborating with the SPPI selection committee and training organizers to review the program’s health protocols. This includes assessing the selection process, medical oversight, and emergency response systems for participants with unique health needs.

He also mentioned that participation in the SPPI program is voluntary, based on a structured selection mechanism. The families of the deceased have received support, and all procedures have been followed according to established guidelines.
