Putin Discusses Expanding Economic Ties – Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, engaged in separate discussions with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan on June 18. The meetings focused on deepening economic collaboration and addressing regional challenges.

Thailand and Russia

During their talks, the leaders emphasized expanding collaboration in trade, energy, and security, as reported by the Thai Enquirer and cited by ANTARA. They also explored the implications of Middle East tensions on global energy security and supply chain stability.

“Thailand welcomes Russia’s support for developing cooperation in clean energy, liquefied natural gas (LNG), petrochemicals, and fertilizer sectors,” stated Anutin. Both nations agreed to continue negotiations for a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

The dialogue also touched on potential collaboration areas, including defense, public health, science and technology, education, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and efforts to combat online fraud. Putin and Anutin outlined plans to enhance tourism and cultural exchanges ahead of the 130th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2027. Anutin noted that nearly two million Russian tourists are expected to visit Thailand by the end of 2025.

Singapore and Russia

Wong and Putin reviewed bilateral relations and regional cooperation. After their meeting, Wong reiterated Singapore’s stance on Ukraine in a social media post, stressing that the country’s position is rooted in the belief that all nations’ sovereignty and territorial integrity must be upheld.

Wong’s visit to Kazan also included a meeting with Rustam Minnikhanov, the leader of the Republic of Tatarstan. In an X post, he mentioned that Minnikhanov recalled his earlier meeting with Singapore’s first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and the enduring friendship cultivated with Singaporeans over time.

“This reflects the long-standing relationship between Singapore and the Republic within the Russian Federation,” Wong added in his post.

According to the Thai-Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, trade between the two countries reached about US$1.5 billion. Meanwhile, Singapore remains one of Russia’s largest trading partners in Southeast Asia, with bilateral trade surpassing US$4 billion in recent years, as per data from the Russian Ministry of Economic Development and the Singaporean government.
