Indonesian President Prabowo Expresses Condolences Following the Death of Qatar’s Former Emir
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who led Qatar from 1995 to 2013, passed away on July 12, 2026, at the age of 74.
Prabowo Offers Condolences on the Passing – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto shared his condolences on social media after the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar. The message, posted on Monday, July 13, 2026, via the @presidenrepublikindonesia account, stated:
“Indonesia extends its deepest condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani and the people of Qatar for the loss of His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.”
Born in 1952 into the Al Thani royal family, which has governed Qatar since the mid-19th century, Hamad attended the British military academy Sandhurst. Before ascending to the emirate, he served as commander of the Qatari armed forces and held the role of defense minister.
Designated as crown prince in the late 1970s to succeed his father, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, Hamad executed a bloodless coup in 1995 to assume leadership while his father was abroad. His tenure marked a pivotal shift for Qatar, transforming it from a small, peripheral state into a regional powerhouse.
During his 18-year rule, Hamad oversaw the adoption of Qatar’s first permanent constitution in 2004 and introduced municipal-level elections, granting women the right to vote and run for office. These reforms elevated Qatar’s political and economic stature, driven by its oil and gas wealth, which propelled the nation to become one of the world’s richest by per capita GDP.
Hamad abdicated in 2013, passing the throne to his son Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, then 33 years old. Tamim has since continued as Qatar’s leader, maintaining the legacy of his father’s transformative governance.
