Norway: Huge Fire Destroys 100 Homes, Sparks Evacuations

Norway – A townhouse fire in southern Norway has consumed over 100 residences, prompting emergency evacuations, according to fire officials. The incident, which occurred on Friday, was largely contained by Saturday, though efforts to suppress the blaze in forested areas continued into the night.

Blaze Matches Century-Long Record

Local media characterized the fire as the most severe in Norway’s history within the Nordic region, surpassing previous incidents by a wide margin. The flames originated near Drammen, approximately 34 kilometers from Oslo, at around 3:30 p.m. local time (1330 UTC/GMT).

Strong winds and unusually dry conditions accelerated the fire’s spread, engulfing a series of townhouses and extending toward nearby forests. Over 400 residents were evacuated as the situation escalated, with firefighting teams deployed from multiple districts.

Firefighters and Helicopters Deployed

Authorities reported that the fire’s threat to residential zones diminished by Saturday lunchtime, though forested regions remained a focus. Helicopters, typically used for wildfire suppression, were also called in to assist in extinguishing efforts.

“My thoughts also go out to the fire and rescue crews and volunteers who are now taking part in the very demanding extinguishing work and are doing all they can to prevent the fire from spreading,” said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store on social media.

No fatalities were confirmed, though one firefighter sustained minor injuries and several civilians received treatment for smoke inhalation. The scene was likened to a war zone by local newspaper Dagbladet, citing burned-out vehicles and collapsed structures.

While officials acknowledged the dry climate contributed to the fire’s rapid progression, the exact cause of the initial outbreak remains under investigation. Read: Bangkok Bar Blaze Death Toll Reaches 32
