No Extreme Drought This Year Will – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has clarified that Indonesia is unlikely to face extreme drought this year due to El Nino. However, the dry season is anticipated to extend beyond typical durations, with rainfall levels falling below average. This assessment comes from Albertus Sulaiman, head of BRIN’s Climate and Atmosphere Research Center, in a report detailing El Nino developments for 2026.

“There’s no need for the public to be alarmed about extreme El Nino this year,” said Albertus, as noted on BRIN’s website.

Probability of Extreme El Nino Increases in Late 2027

Despite the current moderate El Nino scenario, BRIN researchers have identified signs of a heightened risk for extreme El Nino events between late 2027 and mid-2028. Using stochastic analysis via the Fokker-Planck Equation, Albertus noted the probability of a “Godzilla El Nino” could rise to nearly 40% during this timeframe.

“This finding acts as a warning for the government to begin planning long-term strategies,” Albertus explained.

Indian Ocean Dipole Influences Rainfall Patterns

One key factor in this year’s weather outlook is the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which remains in a neutral phase and is expected to persist until April 2027. The IOD refers to temperature fluctuations in the Indian Ocean that can alter wind patterns and atmospheric conditions.

A positive IOD phase typically leads to warmer waters in the western Indian Ocean and cooler temperatures in the eastern-southeastern regions. This pattern historically correlates with reduced rainfall in Indonesia. However, current models suggest a moderate El Nino, rather than an extreme one, is more probable.

Past El Nino Events and Current Energy Levels

Albertus highlighted that Indonesia and the Pacific region recently endured a strong El Nino during 2023-2024. “The ocean hasn’t accumulated enough energy to produce another super extreme El Nino in quick succession,” he stated, emphasizing the physical limitations of consecutive events.

Preparation for Future Drought Impacts

BRIN has already begun developing technologies to manage prolonged dry seasons. The Ina-Carbon platform, for instance, enables real-time monitoring of peatland conditions by tracking groundwater levels, soil moisture, and air quality. This system can predict wildfire risks up to two weeks in advance.

Additionally, BRIN is working on drone-based firefighting solutions to tackle fires in hard-to-reach areas. These innovations are critical as wildfires tend to escalate during extended dry periods linked to El Nino.

Agricultural Adaptations to Reduce Risk

In the agricultural sector, BRIN is implementing strategies to safeguard against crop losses. These include water-efficient irrigation systems, improved resource management, and utilizing underused land such as wetlands for alternative food production during droughts.

Albertus stressed that successful El Nino response depends on both the severity of climate anomalies and the preparedness of mitigation efforts. “With timely implementation of adaptive measures, we can significantly reduce the effects of El Nino,” he concluded.
