Sudaryono Commits to Continuing Free Meal Initiative Amid Public Scrutiny

Kabarsaji.com – Indonesia’s newly designated National Nutrition Agency head, Sudaryono, has pledged to maintain the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) initiative even as opposition grows. Rather than suspending operations, the administration plans to enhance oversight mechanisms and address governance concerns.

Program Origins and Public Mandate

During his inaugural session at the BGN headquarters in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Sudaryono explained that the initiative emerged from President Prabowo Subianto’s electoral commitments. The concept underwent extensive planning prior to voting day and gained voter approval through the campaign process.

“The Nutritious Meals program was one of President Prabowo Subianto’s campaign promises. It was planned long before the election, presented to the public during the campaign, and received a mandate from voters,” Sudaryono stated.

Strengthening Oversight and Economic Impact

The agency intends to bolster monitoring systems to guarantee meal quality and safety for educational institutions. Additionally, officials aim to amplify economic advantages for rural populations who benefit from supply chain participation.

“This is a program for the people and will be delivered to the people. We will continue to listen to criticism and public input,” he emphasized.

Addressing Conflict of Interest Concerns

When questioned about potential conflicts, Sudaryono clarified that neither he nor relatives possess ownership of public kitchens or Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) that secure government contracts for meal distribution.

“I do not own an SPPG unit or a public kitchen. None of my family members own one either,” he confirmed.

Governance Challenges and Leadership Transition

The new chief acknowledged existing operational hurdles, referencing corruption allegations against previous BGN administrators as proof that reforms remain necessary.

“We have seen instances of non-transparent governance practices, and these are matters that need to be addressed,” he noted.

Sudaryono assumed his position on Wednesday, succeeding Nanik Sudaryati Deyang who stepped down following forty-five days in the role due to health complications. In her resignation announcement, Nanik defended the initiative against accusations of political motivation.

“I have been with President Prabowo for 14 years, and I know for certain that the MBG program is not intended for political purposes, as some have alleged,” she wrote.
