Heni Hamidah, head of the Indonesian Citizen Protection Division, stated that individuals residing across the continent are currently safe. In a statement relayed via Antara, she emphasized that no cases of Indonesian nationals being impacted or casualties linked to the heatwave have been documented as of July 1.

“We are coordinating with our embassies and consulates in European nations. To date, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens affected by the heatwave,” Hamidah remarked in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Heatwave Claims Hundreds of Lives Across Europe

As the heatwave intensified, the World Health Organization (WHO) documented over 1,300 additional deaths in Europe during the previous week. These fatalities were attributed to the continent’s unprecedented temperatures, which surged in late June. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that heat stress has been labeled a “silent killer” due to its insidious effects.

“More than 1,300 excess deaths have been recorded since June 21, primarily due to extreme heat conditions in Europe,” Ghebreyesus stated.

Authorities are enhancing measures to address the crisis. Ghebreyesus underscored the need for improved health system resilience, urging collaboration with European nations to prepare for, prevent, and respond to such extreme weather events. Indonesian diplomatic missions in the region are also advising citizens to remain cautious and adopt protective strategies amid the sweltering temperatures.
