Roots in Military Service and Rural Struggles
How Did the Red and White – During a ceremony marking the National Cooperative Day in Jakarta’s Senayan on July 12, 2026, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto outlined the inspiration behind the Red-and-White Village Cooperative initiative. The concept, which has lingered in his thoughts for years, stems from his time in the Indonesian National Army, where he saw firsthand the challenges faced by rural communities.
“I witnessed individuals facing extreme hardship, including those who succumbed to hunger,” Prabowo recalled. “My own food supply was limited to my unit, leaving me powerless to intervene.”
These experiences fueled his determination to foster rural prosperity. Prabowo emphasized that cooperatives could serve as a vital tool to empower villages, stating, “Indonesia’s strength and independence are deeply rooted in its rural areas. We must safeguard and nurture these communities.”
Addressing Debt and Economic Inequality
Prabowo also highlighted the issue of debt as a key driver for the cooperative project. He noted that vulnerable populations often struggle with inconsistent income and urgent needs, forcing them to turn to high-interest loan sharks. “This creates a cycle of poverty,” he explained, “and people deserve affordable financial options.”
“Our citizens must have access to low-interest loans. The solution lies in creating savings and loan cooperatives in every village across the nation,” Prabowo asserted.
By establishing these cooperatives, he believes the government can ensure equitable resource distribution and prevent the misuse of subsidized goods. “Cooperatives can act as a reliable channel for essential items, avoiding exploitation and guaranteeing they reach those in need,” he added.
Reviving Cooperatives for National Growth
Prabowo expressed optimism about the cooperative revival’s potential to strengthen Indonesia’s economy. He argued that decentralized systems like the Red-and-White Village Cooperative would not only address local challenges but also promote sustainable development. “This initiative is a step toward self-reliance and shared progress,” he concluded.
