Bangkok Climate Action Week Opens as Flooding Underscores Climate Risks

Kabarsaji.com – Bangkok began a major regional climate gathering on Saturday, October 3, 2026, while severe flooding across Thailand brought the realities of extreme weather into sharp focus. Bangkok Climate Action Week 2026, which runs through October 11, has adopted the theme “Economy We Shape, Climate We Share.”

The event brings together people working across climate action, culture, public policy, community organizing, business, and education. Its aim is to highlight local leadership and collective ideas for a more inclusive, climate-conscious future in Southeast Asia.

Organized with the involvement of Just Transitions Incubator, the week has been positioned as a regional platform for citizens, creative groups, communities, and institutions. The format resembles other large climate-focused city gatherings, including New York Climate Action Week, but places Southeast Asian experiences and priorities at its center.

More than 250 events across the city

BKKCAW 2026 has brought together more than 250 events involving participants from over 34 countries. Activities are being held at locations throughout central Bangkok, including Lumphini Park, Benjakitti Park, Chulalongkorn University, hotels, cafés, and restaurants.

The program includes public discussions, exhibitions, policy conversations, youth-led activities, cultural presentations, concerts, and learning spaces. By spreading sessions across parks, campuses, and public venues, the gathering gives visitors several ways to engage with climate issues beyond formal conference settings.

Such programming reflects the broad nature of climate action. Environmental challenges are connected not only to emissions and energy choices, but also to food, public spaces, livelihoods, local knowledge, culture, investment, and the ability of communities to respond when climate-related disruption occurs.

Indonesian women forest defenders share their work

One of the Indonesian participants, The Asia Foundation, held an event on October 3 and 4 featuring seven women involved in social forestry business groups and forest protection efforts. They were selected from 171 women active as social forestry entrepreneurs and women forest guardians in villages across South Sumatra, North Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, and Bali.

The seven Women Forest Defenders spoke about women’s leadership, forest monitoring, advocacy, and initiatives involving sustainable forest products. Their participation also introduced visitors to the flavors associated with Indonesian forest ingredients through dishes and sambal preparations.

The Indonesian Food Artists Association supported the processing and presentation of the local ingredients. The food demonstration offered a practical illustration of how forests can be linked to community knowledge, local economies, and cultural traditions, while also emphasizing the importance of protecting the ecosystems that sustain those resources.

“We hope that stories from Indonesia can appear more often and be more widely recognized internationally,” said The Asia Foundation Country Representative Hana A. Satriyo at Lumphini Park in Bangkok on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

Satriyo said the Bangkok gathering could help bring wider attention to positive initiatives emerging in Indonesia.

“We believe the stage at Bangkok Climate Action Week can be a stepping stone to further promote the good stories being developed in Indonesia.”

Climate gathering proceeds amid heavy rain and evacuations

The opening of Bangkok Climate Action Week has taken place during widespread flooding in Thailand, including in the capital. Torrential rain has affected the country since the previous weekend, leaving at least 40 people dead in Bangkok and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.

Thailand’s Meteorological Department issued its second early warning on Friday, cautioning that heavy to very heavy rain could continue from October 4 to October 7. The intense weather arrived near the end of Thailand’s rainy season.

For participants and residents, the timing has made the week’s central issues especially immediate. Flooding can interrupt transport, threaten homes and businesses, strain emergency services, and make access to essential services more difficult. It also raises urgent questions about how urban areas prepare for increasingly disruptive weather conditions.

In a message shared during the event, organizers linked the flooding directly to the purpose of the climate week.

“Moments like this actually bring BKKCAW’s goals closer to the host: how we can build cities, communities, and systems that are better prepared to face the reality that the climate has changed,” the organizer’s post reads.

The situation in Bangkok highlights why climate resilience has become a core concern alongside emissions reduction. Resilience can involve the way public infrastructure is planned, how authorities make decisions during emergencies, and where governments and businesses direct investment. Effective preparation also depends on whether local communities have the information, resources, and support needed to respond to fast-changing conditions.

As BKKCAW continues through October 11, its discussions and public events are unfolding against a vivid reminder that climate policy is not only a long-term objective. For cities and communities confronting floods and other extreme weather, it is closely tied to daily safety, economic stability, and the capacity to recover.
