The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) documented the quake as a 6.6-magnitude event at 07:34 PM local time.

BMKG, Indonesia’s equivalent agency, measured the event at 6.8 on the Richter scale. The tremor was felt in the Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, at intensity III MMI, meaning it was sensed indoors and resembled the vibration caused by a passing truck.

Notably, the tremor occurred offshore and did not prompt any tsunami alerts, contrasting with the June 8 incident. That earlier quake, at magnitude 7.8, killed 81 people and injured over 1,000 others, while also generating a small tsunami that reached parts of Indonesia.

Seismic Details

PHIVOLCS identified the epicenter as approximately 90 kilometers southwest of Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental. BMKG, however, placed the epicenter around 196 kilometers northwest of Tahuna in the Sangihe Islands.

At the highest recorded intensity, level V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, tremors in Kiamba, Sarangani, were strong enough to displace objects within structures.
