Rocky Gerung Speaks on Ethical Role in Prabowo’s Advisory Board
Rocky Gerung Defines Ethical Mission of Prabowo’s Presidential Advisory Board
Kabarsaji.com – Rocky Gerung has described his new position on the Presidential Advisory Board, known as Wantimpres, as an ethical responsibility rather than a technical government role. The academician was sworn in as a member of the board by President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday, October 2, 2026.
In outlining how he sees the assignment, Rocky stressed that the board is expected to look beyond the immediate mechanics of governing. Its members, he said, should consider the wider consequences of state policy and help ensure that policy direction remains connected to the president’s broader vision.
“It also offers guidance on policy direction so that it aligns with the president's vision,” Rocky said.
The distinction is important because Wantimpres is designed to provide counsel at the level of values, judgment, and long-term direction. Rocky contrasted that role with the work of the president’s special advisers, who provide more technical input across particular fields and sectors.
Looking Beyond Immediate Political Events
Rocky said each member of the advisory board carries an ethical duty while carrying out the role. In his view, that requires an ability to create distance from day-to-day developments instead of responding only to the pressures of the moment.
Such a perspective, he suggested, involves reviewing public policy, reflecting on its implications, and anticipating how decisions made today may shape the country in the years ahead. He portrayed the board as a body that should be able to assess the republic’s future direction while offering a form of oversight through its advice.
“Contemplation, evaluation, and even the ability to envision the future of the republic, a sort of oversight committee, are needed,” he stated.
That description places the board’s value in its capacity to provide a broader frame for government decisions. Rather than replacing ministries or technical advisers, its members can be expected to offer views on whether policy choices fit the administration’s stated objectives and the larger public interest.
Rocky also said his entry into government has not changed his fundamental thinking about the state. He maintained that his perspective remains rooted in what he called a radical break, even as his position has shifted from an external observer to someone serving within a presidential institution.
“I simply moved from outside the government to the inside,” he said.
He added that he did not see a reason to turn down the offer to join the board. The appointment gives him a formal role in an institution intended to advise the president while allowing him to continue emphasizing questions of ethics, public perception, and political direction.
Public Perception and the Exercise of Power
For Rocky, the board’s work also includes understanding how citizens view political power. He said a strong political instinct is necessary to identify points at which public perceptions of authority become distorted or lose their connection to national interests.
“And how power can shape that perception so it works positively for the nation,” Rocky said.
His comments indicate that he sees Wantimpres as more than a forum for internal advice. The institution may also contribute to the way an administration’s goals are understood in public, provided that its guidance remains consistent with the head of state’s vision.
The emphasis on ethics separates the board from offices focused on implementation. Technical recommendations on specific areas of government remain with the president’s special advisers, while Wantimpres members are expected to address broader considerations surrounding policy direction, consequences, and public trust.
Twenty-Six Members Appointed
The leadership and membership of the Presidential Advisory Board were established through Presidential Decree No. 107/P of 2026 on the Appointment of Members of the Presidential Advisory Board. President Prabowo appointed 26 people to the institution.
Pratikno was named chair and member. Muhammad Hatta Rajasa was appointed vice chair and member, while Muhammad Qodari became secretary and member.
The remaining members are Sinta Nuriyah Wahid, Quraish Shihab, Agum Gumelar, Chairul Tanjung, Said Aqil Siradj, Anwar Iskandar, Yahya Cholil Staquf, Jusuf Wanandi, Budi Gunawan, Bambang Soesatyo, Salim Segaf Al-Jufri, Soekarwo, Dato’ Sri Tahir, Rocky Gerung, Ida Bagus Purwalaksana, Philip Kuntjoro Widjaja, Budi Santoso Tanuwibowo, Anwar Usman, Muhammad Hatta, Jusuf Hamka, Margarito Kamis, Jacklevyn Frits Manuputty, and Ignasius Jonan.
The composition brings together figures from academic, religious, political, legal, business, and public-service backgrounds. With 26 members, the board has a wide range of experience available to the president, although Rocky’s remarks underscored that its central task is not to manage technical policy execution.
Instead, he presented the advisory body as a forum for thoughtful judgment: one that weighs the ethical meaning of government choices, considers their likely effects, and helps keep policy aligned with the direction set by President Prabowo.
