Fog Reduces Visibility in Jayapura, With BMKG Ruling Out Strong Fire Link

Kabarsaji.com – Residents of Jayapura City have recently encountered foggy conditions that have reduced visibility, particularly during hours when moisture levels are high. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, known as BMKG, says the situation is a natural weather event and not a clear sign of forest or land fires.

Sulaiman, who leads the Climatology Station at BMKG’s local office, said the mist forming around the city consists of extremely small water droplets lingering close to ground level. The agency has emphasized that the current conditions should not automatically be interpreted as smoke haze.

"It is a meteorological phenomenon formed by the presence of very small water droplets suspended near the earth's surface," Sulaiman said in Jayapura on Monday.

The distinction matters because fog and haze can look similar from the ground. Both can obscure roads, buildings, hills, and other landmarks, but they develop through different processes and can carry different implications for public health, travel, and environmental monitoring.

Humidity and Temperature Drive Fog Formation

Fog commonly develops when the air contains abundant moisture and temperatures cool to near the dew point, the point at which water vapor begins condensing into droplets. Weak winds can allow those droplets to remain concentrated near the surface instead of dispersing quickly.

Jayapura’s tropical setting can support this type of formation, especially overnight and during the early morning. High relative humidity gives the atmosphere the moisture needed for fog, while cooler nighttime conditions can help water vapor turn into visible droplets.

"In tropical areas like Jayapura, high humidity can support fog formation, especially at night and in the morning," he said.

Local geography may also shape where fog becomes most noticeable. Coastal zones, surrounding hills, and valleys can influence the distribution of moisture and the movement of air. Such features may cause fog to linger in one area while nearby locations remain clearer.

For people traveling through the city and its surrounding terrain, reduced visibility can be more than an inconvenience. Drivers may have less time to see other vehicles, pedestrians, turns, or changing road conditions. Extra caution is particularly important in the morning and on hilly routes, where visibility may shift over short distances.

Why Haze Is Different From Fog

Haze is caused by fine particles suspended in the atmosphere rather than condensed water droplets. Dust, naturally occurring aerosols, vehicle emissions, industrial activity, and combustion can all contribute to hazy air. These particles reduce atmospheric clarity and may travel well beyond their original source.

Forest fires are often linked with haze because smoke can carry fine particles over long distances. Yet hazy conditions in a particular place do not necessarily mean that a fire is burning nearby. Conversely, the presence of reduced visibility alone cannot establish that smoke is responsible.

"Besides fog, there's haze, a condition where fine particles suspended in the atmosphere reduce air clarity. These particles can originate from various sources, including dust, natural aerosols, vehicle activity, industrial activities, and combustion processes," he said.

That difference is central to BMKG’s assessment in Jayapura. A foggy appearance may prompt concern during periods when fire risks are being watched closely, but a proper evaluation requires more than visual observations.

Satellite and Hotspot Checks Around Jayapura

BMKG monitoring conducted on October 9 and 10, 2026 found no hotspots in Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, or nearby areas. In addition, Himawari-9 satellite imagery analyzed on October 11 showed haze in several parts of Papua, though neither Jayapura City nor Jayapura Regency was included among those locations.

Those findings do not provide a strong indication that the fog affecting Jayapura City is connected to forest fires. Still, the agency notes that the absence of a detected hotspot cannot conclusively eliminate every possible source of smoke.

Satellite observation has practical limits. Cloud cover can obscure conditions below, the timing of an observation may not capture every event, and weaker heat sources can be difficult to identify. For that reason, determining why visibility has declined requires a wider review of the weather conditions at the time.

Relevant factors include relative humidity, air temperature, wind speed and direction, horizontal visibility, and broader atmospheric conditions. Taken together, these indicators can help distinguish moisture-driven fog from particle-based haze and identify whether local terrain or changing weather patterns are influencing the scene.

Advice for the Public

BMKG has urged the public to remain calm and avoid immediately linking every episode of low visibility to forest fires. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and fog is a familiar meteorological occurrence in humid tropical environments.

Road users are encouraged to stay alert whenever visibility falls, leave more space between vehicles, and adjust their travel to conditions on the road. Morning travel and journeys through elevated or uneven terrain may require particular care when fog is present.

"BMKG continues to monitor atmospheric conditions through meteorological observations and satellite information to support the delivery of accurate weather information to the public," said Sulaiman.

Continued monitoring will help clarify changes in visibility across Jayapura and surrounding areas. For now, available observations point to naturally formed fog as the primary explanation for the conditions seen in the city.
