The monitoring effort brings together AirNav, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The focus is not limited to the volcano itself. Aviation planners are tracking eruption activity, wind movements, and the possible spread of ash or other volcanic material into airspace used by commercial flights. These factors can change rapidly, making frequent updates essential for airlines and airport operators.

"Monitoring is conducted for the volcano eruption activity, wind direction, and the possibility of volcanic material spreading that could affect flight routes," said Nurcahyo Utomo, AirNav Indonesia’s Director of Safety, Security, and Standardization.

Nurcahyo made the remarks in Tangerang on Friday, September 11, 2026. He said route information will be revised when conditions require it, allowing aircraft to stay clear of locations that may be exposed to volcanic activity.

Small Diversions Rather Than Major Detours

Any changes to flight tracks would generally be measured adjustments rather than dramatic diversions. AirNav can direct aircraft around an affected corridor while keeping flights on routes that remain safe and practical.

"For example, if a flight from Jakarta to Palembang were to pass through Tanjung Karang, it would need to veer slightly north. Not too far," he added.

This approach is intended to protect aircraft from hazardous airspace while limiting the disruption caused by longer travel distances. Volcanic ash is a serious concern for aviation because its movement depends heavily on atmospheric conditions, especially wind direction. Even when an eruption occurs some distance from an airport, ash carried into a flight corridor can force restrictions or route changes.

At present, the wind is blowing away from Soekarno-Hatta Airport, reducing the immediate likelihood of another disruption to operations there. Domestic routes are not currently passing directly through the affected eruption area. International services could face a greater potential impact, particularly flights operating through the region between Australia and the Middle East.

AirNav’s timing for updates depends on the scale of developments. In normal circumstances, new information may be issued within six hours. If an event produces an immediate operational concern, revisions may be released in as little as one hour.

"If there is no significant information, usually within six hours. But if suddenly there is something impactful, it might be updated in an hour," he said.

Managing Traffic After Operations Resume

AirNav is also preparing for the flow of aircraft once normal operations return. Reopening an airport after a major interruption involves more than allowing planes to take off and land again. Aircraft already positioned at the airport, available parking space, and the arrival of inbound flights must all be coordinated carefully.

The Soekarno-Hatta airspace can handle up to 81 flights per hour. However, special traffic management measures are used during the first two hours after operations resume to prevent congestion on the ground.

Departures are initially given priority because aircraft parked at the airport must be moved before additional arrivals can be accepted in large numbers. If incoming services were prioritized too quickly, available parking positions could become exhausted.

"Because the parking area is full. If we prioritize incoming flights, there will be no parking space. So we prioritize clearing the parking area first, then accept incoming flights," he explained.

During the first two hours of resumed operations, AirNav managed 61 departures from Jakarta and 20 arriving flights. Once traffic conditions stabilized, operations were set to return to the regular capacity pattern of up to 81 flights an hour.

"After the situation is back under control, the subsequent flight traffic will follow the normal pattern with a capacity of up to 81 flights per hour," said Nurcahyo.

Recent Disruption Highlights the Need for Constant Monitoring

The renewed focus on Anak Krakatau follows widespread disruption on September 6 and 7, 2026, when the volcano’s eruption led to the cancellation of thousands of flights. Soekarno-Hatta Airport and several other airports were temporarily shut because volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau affected flight operations. No flights operated during the closures.

For travelers, route changes or phased airport reopenings can mean altered departure times, revised arrival schedules, or temporary delays even after an airport resumes activity. Such precautions are designed to restore operations in an orderly way while maintaining separation between aircraft in the air and ensuring space is available on the ground.

AirNav’s continuing coordination with volcanology and weather authorities reflects the central role of real-time information in aviation decisions. As long as Anak Krakatau remains active, the direction of ash, the intensity of eruptions, and the conditions along individual flight routes will determine whether normal operations can continue or whether aircraft need to be guided around the affected area.
