Taco Bell Lettuce Tied to Diarrhea – Investigators in the United States have linked a recent parasite outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce used in Taco Bell locations, as reported by the CDC. The agency has identified 1,645 individuals across five states connected to the incident. A single supplier from Mexico is suspected of providing the contaminated lettuce to the chain’s restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.
Taco Bell stated it had pulled the lettuce from its menu following CDC findings. Initially, authorities did not specify the supplier’s name, but Taylor Farms later confirmed that health tests pointed to a particular independent farm associated with the company. The firm also noted it was removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico as a precaution.
Health officials are still examining potential other sources of contamination, including other brands or distribution channels. The current cyclospora outbreak is the most significant in recent years, with 30 states reporting cases this year. Michigan has seen the highest number of infections, around 5,000, though federal and state records may vary due to differences in reporting practices.
What Is Cyclospora?
Cyclospora is a type of foodborne parasite known for causing gastrointestinal issues, often resulting in severe diarrhea with frequent bowel movements. While rarely fatal, the illness typically requires antibiotic treatment. Bagged salad mixes and fresh produce from Taylor Farms have previously been linked to similar outbreaks.
Impact on Taco Bell’s Business
The outbreak occurs amid Taco Bell’s strong recent performance. Sales at locations open for over a year increased by 8% in the first quarter, and the company is expanding into Europe, including Germany and Poland by 2026. However, analysts warn that foodborne illness incidents could slow near-term sales growth. “This outbreak may impact (Taco Bell’s) same-store sales,” said Ari Felhandler of Morningstar, referencing past events like the E. coli outbreak tied to McDonald’s in 2024.
“The recent outbreak will likely dent (Taco Bell’s) near-term same-store sales growth,” said Ari Felhandler, an analyst at Morningstar.
