Canada Wildfires: Smoke Choking Major US Cities

Canada Wildfires – Smoke from over 800 wildfires burning in Canada has triggered air quality alerts in several U.S. cities this week, raising concerns about pollution impacts and prompting potential tariff actions from President Donald Trump.

Cities Record ‘Hazardous’ Air Quality Readings

Both Detroit and Chicago reported air quality levels in the “hazardous” range, while New York’s metro area experienced a smoky haze, classified as unhealthy for vulnerable populations. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that conditions might deteriorate overnight, affecting the Northeast region.

“Wind patterns over the Great Lakes could lead to increased smoke entering the Northeast, keeping skies hazy,” said NWS meteorologist Peter Mullinax.

Experts also noted that weather systems over the weekend might further intensify the southward movement of smoke.

Trump Threatens Canada with More Tariffs

President Trump expressed frustration over the wildfire situation, blaming Canada for the “unhealthy air” invading the U.S. and threatening higher tariffs to offset the “cost of this pollution.”

“We are holding Canada responsible for failing to manage their forests and brush effectively. The U.S. is being unnecessarily affected by filthy, polluted air—dangerous and totally unacceptable,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform.

He plans to discuss the issue with Canada’s prime minister to determine their response.

World Cup Organizers ‘Monitoring Closely’

FIFA World Cup organizers are closely tracking the impact of poor air quality on the final match between Spain and Argentina, set to take place at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

“There’s been discussion about the situation, and we have an NWS representative stationed at FIFA headquarters to monitor conditions,” explained Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House World Cup task force.

Millions of Hectares Burnt

As of Friday, 903 fires were active in Canada, with 122 classified as uncontrollable. The Canadian government reported that 2.784 million hectares—approximately 6.8 million acres—have been consumed by flames.

Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the severity, stating that the wildfire crisis has worsened significantly in the last three weeks, particularly in Northwestern Ontario. He noted that thousands of residents have been evacuated, unsure if their homes will remain standing.
