During a recent high-level meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, the minister emphasized the nation’s enthusiasm for joining international efforts to develop an accessible and socially impactful AI ecosystem. “Indonesia’s support for open AI frameworks aligns with our vision of using technology to uplift communities and drive inclusive growth,” he stated, as reported by ANTARA. This move reflects the government’s broader strategy to position the country as a key player in the global AI landscape, particularly in fostering innovation that serves both local and international interests.
Strategic Partnership with China
Airlangga highlighted China’s leadership in launching the “World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization” (WAICO) and expressed Indonesia’s eagerness to be a founding member. The minister noted that Indonesia’s alignment with WAICO is a direct response to President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to fast-track AI integration across sectors. “By partnering with China, Indonesia gains access to cutting-edge resources and expertise that will accelerate our own AI development,” he added. This collaboration is expected to create a platform for shared knowledge, joint research, and equitable distribution of AI benefits. The WAICO initiative aims to build a unified framework for AI innovation, ensuring that all participating nations contribute to and benefit from the technology’s advancements.
“AI development should not be a solo performance by a single nation, but a symphony of international cooperation,” President Xi remarked during the WAIC opening, underscoring the importance of collective progress in harnessing AI for global prosperity. His remarks resonated with Indonesia’s vision, as the country seeks to leverage open systems to address local challenges such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare while remaining connected to international trends.
Global Collaboration and the UN’s Role
Indonesia’s involvement in WAICO has also garnered support from the United Nations, which has endorsed the organization’s mission to create an inclusive AI ecosystem. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised the initiative for its potential to unite nations in tackling global issues through technology. “WAICO can serve as a catalyst for AI-driven solutions that meet the needs of developing countries and advance the Sustainable Development Goals,” he stated. This endorsement highlights the growing recognition of open AI frameworks as a tool for equitable progress, particularly in regions where technological access is still limited. Indonesia’s participation in WAICO is seen as a strategic step toward ensuring that AI benefits are not confined to wealthier nations but are shared globally.
Indonesia’s commitment to open AI ecosystems is further demonstrated by its focus on building robust digital infrastructure. The country’s digital economy, currently valued at $130 billion, is projected to triple in size through AI-driven growth, according to Airlangga. He explained that data centers, cloud computing, and high-speed internet are critical components in enabling AI to reach its full potential. “A strong digital backbone is essential for Indonesia to contribute meaningfully to global AI efforts,” the minister added. By investing in these areas, Indonesia aims to create an environment where startups, researchers, and governments can collaborate on projects that prioritize public welfare and sustainable development.
Challenges and Opportunities in an Open AI Ecosystem
While Indonesia’s support for open AI ecosystems is promising, challenges such as data privacy, cybersecurity, and funding remain. Airlangga acknowledged that these hurdles require coordinated efforts between governments and private sectors. “Open AI systems must be designed with transparency and accountability to ensure they serve all stakeholders,” he emphasized. At the WAIC event, Indonesia was joined by officials from other nations, including Algeria and Belarus, to discuss the future of AI cooperation. The minister highlighted the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping the organization’s direction. “Each country brings unique strengths, and Indonesia is ready to share its own contributions to the global AI agenda,” he said. The declaration signed by 29 countries at the conference marks a significant milestone in international AI collaboration. By fostering an open ecosystem, Indonesia and its partners aim to create a future where AI is not just a tool for economic growth but a force for social good, driving innovation while ensuring equitable access and benefits for all.
