Electric Pedicabs Hit the Streets of Yogyakarta – On Thursday, July 16, 2026, Yogyakarta’s Governor, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, and Sultan Hamengkubuwono X unveiled the electric pedicab initiative, Bekalista, at Alun-Alun Kidul. The project aims to modernize local transportation while preserving cultural heritage.

Community Empowerment Through Innovation

During the event, Purbaya took a ride on a Bekalista pedicab, emphasizing that the initiative represents a community-driven economic empowerment program, driven by collaborative electrification efforts from national and local authorities.

“In a statement at the launch, Purbaya remarked, ‘Tradition is not meant to hinder advancement, but to guide it in a way that preserves its cultural essence.’ ”

Program Structure and Local Participation

The program involves 80 beneficiaries, with 15 drivers present at the event to represent their participation. To ensure long-term viability, the Bekalista network includes 12 charging stations, a mobile workshop, eight spare batteries, and a central workshop at Yogyakarta State Vocational High School 3.

All aspects of the ecosystem, from manufacturing to electrical work, are completed using 100% local labor. This includes the development of a vocational training facility at the same school.

Vehicle Specifications

Bekalista is engineered as a robust, quiet, and eco-conscious tourism vehicle. It features a 750W BLDC electric motor with a planetary gear system, ensuring efficiency and reliability.

The vehicle uses a 48V, 30Ah LiFePO4 battery, paired with a BMS (Battery Management System) and programmable controller. These components enhance performance while minimizing environmental impact.

Performance and Safety Features

The pedicab is capable of reaching speeds up to 18 km/h, following the 15 km/h SOP for safe operation. It can manage slopes as steep as 10%, and a full charge allows for a 50 km range.

Safety is prioritized with a dual braking system (Dual Disc + Mechanical Brake). The wheels are robust 28-inch Araya Super tires with 12G spokes, accommodating one driver and two passengers. The load capacity is limited to 350 kg.

Two Variants for Diverse Needs

The initiative includes two variants. The Special Type offers a spacious 90 cm seating area, ideal for premium tourist zones with capacity for up to three adults. The classic model, meanwhile, features a compact 70 cm seat, designed for maneuverability in tight urban spaces, supporting two adults.
