Gaza Strip Receives €900 Million in EU Support for Reconstruction

Gaza Strip – A European Union-backed gathering has allocated €900 million in aid to the Gaza Strip, aimed at rebuilding infrastructure damaged during the ongoing conflict. This contribution will initially focus on restoring essential water and sanitation services, as well as reviving the region’s healthcare and food supply systems. The funding comes amid dire conditions for nearly two million residents, with over half currently residing in temporary shelters due to the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

Humanitarian Needs and Coordination Efforts

The Team Gaza Initiative will oversee the distribution of resources to address immediate needs and support long-term recovery. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized that reforms within the Palestinian Authority are critical for continued solidarity with the territory. Invitations extended to the conference included Palestinian delegates and representatives from the Board of Peace, a body founded by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Reforms in the Palestinian Authority are needed for the bloc to sustain its support,” stated Kaja Kallas.

According to a UN report published in May 2026, the total cost to repair and reconstruct Gaza is estimated at $71.4 billion. The document highlights that 371,888 homes have been directly impacted, with 85% of them entirely destroyed. Over 1.9 million Palestinians—more than 90% of the population—have been displaced by the conflict, some multiple times.

War Origins and Control Dynamics

The conflict erupted following Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the capture of 251 individuals. As of now, approximately 70% of Gaza remains under Israeli military control, while Hamas holds the remaining territory. Despite the October 2025 ceasefire agreement mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, the group has not fully disarmed.

The Board of Peace, a technocratic organization led by Bulgarian diplomat Nickolay Mladenov, was established to manage civil affairs in the region. This body plays a key role in coordinating humanitarian efforts amid the ongoing crisis.

Genocide Allegations and Legal Proceedings

In September 2025, the UN’s Commission of Inquiry accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Several international human rights groups have echoed this claim, describing Israeli operations as acts of genocide. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently reviewing a case initiated by South Africa in 2023. Israel has consistently denied these allegations, asserting that the conflict is a necessary response to security threats.
