Indonesia Calls for De-Escalation as US-Iran Break Truce

Indonesia Calls for De Escalation as US – Following escalating tensions between the United States and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, Indonesia has urged both nations to show restraint and pursue measures to reduce hostilities. The country emphasized the importance of maintaining calm to prevent further destabilization in the region.

On July 7, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a series of strikes targeting 80 military sites in Iran, citing retaliation for attacks on commercial vessels passing through the strategic waterway. The following day, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded by launching missile and drone strikes on 85 US installations across the Middle East, including key bases in Bahrain and Kuwait.

Indonesia’s Diplomatic Stance

Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Yvonne Mewengkang, reiterated the need for dialogue and adherence to international law during a press conference in Jakarta. “All parties must remain composed and avoid actions that risk intensifying the crisis,” she stated, highlighting the importance of continued negotiations.

“Indonesia emphasizes that maintaining peace between the US and Iran is vital for regional stability and restoring security in the Strait of Hormuz,” Mewengkang added.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump declared that the agreement with Iran to halt hostilities had expired, signaling a shift in Washington’s approach. Speaking at a NATO summit in Ankara, he criticized Tehran, saying, “It’s a very interesting question. To me, I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore, they’re scum.”

Trump also noted that Iran’s attacks on merchant ships had exhausted his patience, labeling Iranian leaders as “liars.” He stated that the administration’s current priority is ensuring Iran’s full denuclearization, marking a clear departure from previous diplomatic efforts.
