Why Two of Nadiem Makarim’s Lawyers Face Ethics Complaints

Why Two of Nadiem Makarim s Lawyers – TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jamsaki, an Indonesian anti-corruption group, has submitted ethics complaints against two lawyers defending former Education Minister Nadiem Makarim. The complaints urge the Central Jakarta District Court and the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi) to probe their conduct after the verdict in the Chromebook procurement corruption case.

Civil Society Group Seeks Sanctions

Jamsaki spokesperson Umar Yuli Abbas stated the group has requested the Central Jakarta District Court to issue a reprimand against the two lawyers, while pushing the Jakarta High Court to revoke their legal licenses. Additionally, the group has asked Peradi to summon the lawyers and apply disciplinary measures for breaches of the legal profession’s code of ethics.

“At Peradi, we are requesting that the lawyers be summoned and subjected to ethical sanctions for the alleged violations,” Umar said on Monday, July 7.

Complaint Centers on Courtroom Remarks

The complaints focus on remarks from Nadiem’s legal team following the verdict in the Chromebook procurement corruption case. Umar explained that these statements were made after the judges announced their decision.

The statement at issue was: “Why the hurry, Your Honor? Afraid, are you? Uh-oh, this is serious. It is our right to speak.”

Jamsaki attributes the remark to Ari Yusuf Amir, who criticized the judges for not allowing his client to present arguments after the verdict was delivered.

On June 30, the judges did not directly question Nadiem about accepting the ruling. Nevertheless, presiding Judge Purwanto S. Abdullah reminded all parties of their right to challenge the decision through legal channels.

Nadiem’s Lawyers Also Report Judges

Separately, Nadiem’s legal team has lodged complaints against four of the five judges who presided over his 10-year prison sentence. The accused judges are Purwanto S. Abdullah, Eryusman, Sunoto, and Mardiantos. These individuals are under investigation by Indonesia’s Judicial Commission for potential breaches of judicial conduct and professional standards.

“We have officially filed reports with the Judicial Commission regarding the case we handled, namely the case of Nadiem Anwar Makarim at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court. Our reports are supported by clear evidence,” Ari said at the Judicial Commission on Monday, July 6.
