His remarks were delivered during a visit to Lampedusa, Italy, a crucial entry point for individuals attempting perilous Mediterranean voyages from Africa to reach the continent.

Leo emphasized that Europe holds the capacity to address the migration crisis comprehensively, merging urgent aid with long-term strategies to receive, safeguard, and integrate migrants. He also highlighted the importance of collaborating with developing countries to reduce the pressures driving people to leave their homes.

“From this remote part of Europe, one can more clearly grasp the profound challenges migration presents to our societies,” the pontiff stated to an audience of believers.

During his time in Lampedusa, the Pope participated in a memorial service at a migrant cemetery, greeted newcomers at the harbor, and led a Mass on the island. These activities underscored his commitment to the plight of displaced individuals.

According to the UN refugee agency, over 14,000 migrants arrived in Italy during the first half of the year, with the majority departing from Libya. Notably, nearly 60% of these individuals landed in Lampedusa, illustrating its significance as a key destination.

Leo expressed gratitude to the island’s 6,000-strong fishing and tourism community for their demonstrated solidarity. His message echoed a broader call for compassion and unity in tackling migration challenges.

Pope’s Appeal to the United States

Separately, the pontiff commemorated the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence by encouraging its citizens to embrace immigrants. In a letter to the nation, he stressed that welcoming newcomers aligns with Catholic principles of defending life.

“Welcoming, protecting, and assisting immigrants is not merely an act of charity—it is a testament to the inherent dignity of every human being,” he wrote.

One day prior, Leo had acknowledged the role of successive waves of immigrants in shaping the U.S. during a video message to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. He noted that “America” is globally synonymous with “freedom” due to its tradition of accepting and integrating newcomers.
