Tempo Launches Content Provider Business for AI Platforms

Tempo Launches Content Provider Business for AI – PT Info Media Digital, known as Tempo Digital, has announced the formal launch of a new initiative aimed at supplying journalistic content and data to artificial intelligence (AI) companies and platforms. This move represents a strategic effort to adapt to evolving digital ecosystems, with the goal of fostering innovation while ensuring fair compensation for content creators.

Two-Phase Strategy for AI Integration

The initiative unfolds via two phases. Initially, Tempo will restrict access to AI-driven bots that automatically gather, store, and utilize its content without prior authorization. Simultaneously, the company is establishing a structured pathway for AI entities to obtain content legally, transparently, and at a cost, leveraging the OpenMined framework.

Through this system, AI platforms can access content on demand using models like pay-per-query. Usage terms will be defined based on license agreements, content type, usage volume, intended applications, and the economic value generated.

“This policy is not designed to impede AI growth. Instead, Tempo aims to cultivate an information environment where innovation thrives and creators receive equitable recognition,” explained Wahyu Dhyatmika, Tempo Media Group’s Director of Digital Transformation.

Adapting to AI-Driven Changes

The initiative reflects Tempo’s latest adaptation to the shifting dynamics of information sharing since early 2025. The rise of AI-powered search engines, content aggregators, and automated chatbots has transformed how audiences engage with news, often bypassing publisher websites entirely (zero-click consumption).

This shift has led to a noticeable decline in media traffic and programmatic ad revenue. Tempo reported a 33.5% drop in pageviews and a 19.4% decrease in user engagement in 2025 compared to the prior year. Such trends have directly affected revenue streams that once relied on visitor numbers and ad impressions.

From Blockage to Official Data Market

Tempo’s approach now transitions from restriction to formalization. While initially blocking AI bots—such as crawlers and archivers—used for content extraction, the company is separately mapping bots that facilitate news distribution through general search engines to avoid disrupting public access.

“The blockage will be phased to assess effects on content flow, server efficiency, organic traffic, and overall digital operations,” noted Heru Tjatur Tjahja, Tempo Digital’s Chief Technology Officer.

Blocked AI bots can now channel through Tempo’s official OpenMined interface, creating a regulated partnership between content producers and technology firms. This system ensures AI platforms access high-quality material while adhering to clear usage guidelines, attribution rules, and payment protocols.

Collaborative Framework for Data Access

Tempo’s strategy is supported by a collaboration between OpenMined, the Australian Media and Society Institute (AMSI), and the International Federation of Press and Information Managers (IFPIM). OpenMined, a non-profit organization, develops open-source tools that enable secure and controlled data access, empowering content owners to retain authority over their material.

By aligning with these partners, Tempo seeks to establish a sustainable model where media content remains a critical component of AI accuracy and reliability. This economic shift aims to balance the benefits of AI innovation with the rights of journalists and publishers.
