France Experiences Record Heat-Related Mortality Amid Unprecedented Temperatures

France Logs 1 000 More Deaths – The French Health Ministry reported on Sunday that the country has seen an unusual surge in deaths since June 24, with approximately 1,000 additional fatalities compared to earlier months. These figures, however, remain preliminary.

“Tuesday, June 23, marked the nation’s hottest day on record, surpassing the previous benchmark from 2003,” the ministry statement noted.

According to the ministry, death tolls rose sharply during the heatwave, reaching over 1,200 on June 24, with more than 1,400 recorded on June 25 and 26. In contrast, April and May saw an average of 900 to 1,000 daily deaths.

Health officials highlighted that the spike was most notable in regions under red alerts, such as Ile-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Brittany, Centre-Val de Loire, Normandy, and Pays de la Loire. The ministry emphasized that the mortality increase spans all age groups, though 85% of victims were 65 or older.

Notably, deaths at home rose by 40%, while hospital and nursing home fatalities also climbed. The ministry cautioned that electronic death certificates, which form the basis of these statistics, account for about 60% of total mortality and may overlook home-based deaths entirely.

European Heatwave Expected to Affect 191 Million People

French news agency AFP projected that at least 191 million Europeans will face temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius as the current heatwave shifts toward central and eastern regions. This surge is anticipated to intensify in Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland.

Meanwhile, a broader estimate suggests 381 million individuals across Europe, excluding Turkey, will experience heat above 30 degrees Celsius. The AFP analysis relies on forecasts from the German Meteorological Service and 2025 population data from the Joint Research Center, as tracked by Austrian NGO Klimadashboard.
